Babymoon… the expectant parent version of a honeymoon. Think of it as a little getaway just before your new baby arrives and the madness sets in. It’s the calm before the storm, and a chance for you and your partner to have a little dedicated couple time together. We felt it was important to reconnect with each other, get some alone time, relax and soak in a few moments of paradise before the era of just us two comes to an end.
Babymoons have definitely grown in popularity lately, but a worthy vacation that you too should consider if you are having a baby anytime in the future!
Baby B will be here before we know it, so my hubby and I decided to take a few days to ourselves for our babymoon in Scottsdale, Arizona! I’m sharing all of the highlights and recommendations from our trip because it was truly a magical few days and just what this mama-to-be needed before we bring home a new member of our family!
Things To Do in Phoenix
Phoenix is known for its glorious sunshine, exquisite sunsets, breathtaking desert vistas and an abundance of unique activities and offerings. Whether you are planning a trip for two, a family vacation, girls trip, looking for culture and cuisine or recreation and relaxation, this city provides the ultimate escape as there is literally something for everyone.
Where to Stay:
JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa
If you want to stay at a destination in itself, visit the amazing JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa! In true Marriott fashion, this one won’t let you down. This hotel is located in the center of the Sonoran Desert, and in close proximity to a number of options for hiking, exploring, shopping, dining, etc.
We really didn’t “plan” anything aside from spa visits, pool and tee times, as we were very serious about spending the entire weekend relaxing! So many of our trips are packed with a full itinerary and on the go, and we were really looking forward to enjoying the weekend unwinding. This resort was the perfect choice for that!
We LOVED everything about this property! As soon as you step onto the property you can immediately feel the zen vibes through the lush, green landscaping and the private atmosphere. From the grand driveway entrance to the surrounding walking trails and natural desert vegetation that envelopes you within the Arizona lifestyle.
A beautiful championship golf course, a world-class buffet brunch, plush room accommodations, just to name a few of the top of the class amenities on-site. Our favorite was the lazy river that circulates around many other large swimming pools. If you’re a gal that likes her options, take your pick, they have 5 to choose from. There’s ample seating – chase lounges, all-new pool suites, and a pool bar and table seating. Don’t forget to order yourself a Strawberry Daiquiri in a fresh coconut mama-to-be (they make a mean mocktail version) poolside!
Overall, we received a 5 Star experience indeed! It was truly the ambiance and friendly staff and superior customer service that set this visit apart from anywhere we’ve stayed. The resort is special because it encourages you to reconnect. Indulge your foodie senses at their restaurants, feel refreshed and rejuvenated at Revive Spa, spend a day pool hopping, lounging and soaking up the beauty of this resort as we did. We left feeling relaxed and our bond even that much stronger from the quality time spent together.
Thank you JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa for hosting us and making sure we had the babymoon of our dreams! Learn more about the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa and available luxury accommodations HERE.
What to Do:
Visit the Desert Botanical Garden
If you’re looking to see beautiful scenery, visit the Desert Botanical Garden! Explore garden trails, desert plants, and catch seasonal events at this 50-acre desert garden. This is a great introduction to the unique plants and landscapes of the region; it’s a good place to spot birds, too. The Botanical Garden is located in the sprawling Papago Park, which covers a large part of eastern Phoenix.
Pretty high up on my list of things I wanted to see, I could have spent the entire day admiring the saguaros and wildlife in this botanical garden. Especially if you’re new visitor to the Southwest, the Desert Botanical Garden is a must-see!
Take a Hike
While you’re enjoying your time in the great outdoors, with some of the most picturesque landscapes, why not take a hike? Phoenix has a multitude of amazing hiking trails in and around the city with guides easily accessible that classify them by difficulty, so you can easily find one that suits your skill level.
One of the most well-known and popular outdoor hiking routes in the Phoenix area by locals and tourists alike is Camelback Mountain. The trails to get to the top of the mountain are definitely challenging (even more so for a preggo gal like me), but well worth the effort for some awesome views and great exercise! Keep in mind that the Phoenix heat makes this hike extra challenging, especially during our visit, so start your hike as early in the morning as possible and bring lots of water.
Relax in the Spa
You can’t take a babymoon trip to Phoenix without indulging in a day of relaxing in a decadent spa. After all, Phoenix is famous for its luxurious spas, and mom-to-be’s are constantly being told to relax and take it easy, and, let’s face it, there’s no better way to chill out than by visiting a spa when pregnant!
Located within our resort, Revive Spa offers guests an escape to the best luxurious facials, massages, and body treatments. Visit the salon for an array of nail, pedicure, hair care, hair removal, and cosmetic services. I could have easily spent every afternoon of our stay here! With any spa service booked, you are granted access to the outdoor private spa pool, Spa Bistro, sauna & steam rooms plus the lounge and showers in the changing area, to use before or after your treatment.
I was overdue for a prenatal massage and very much looking forward to it with how uncomfortable my body has been feeling. I booked a Revive Prenatal Massage and it was 50 minutes of pure bliss. From the moment I entered, to the moment I left, tranquil ambiance stayed with me during my entire stay, in spite of the grueling triple digit Arizona heat.
After my massage, I continued my spa visit to the outdoor pool for some relaxation. I loved the tall palm trees and the oasis ambiance. I was able to order a poolside smoothie and sit back and enjoy some valuable me-time.
Whether you book your stay in a resort spa, or you just visit for the day, you’ll leave a completely new person. Now is the time to relax, enjoy and spoil yourself as much as possible so you’re as rested as you can be for the big event and the sleepless nights to follow. Treat yourself mama and enjoy your day of pampering!
Play a Few Holes
It’s no shocker that Phoenix and Scottsdale are home to some of the world’s most beautiful golf courses, and from my husband’s perspective, it’s likely one of the most sought-after things to do in Phoenix. There’s a wide variety of golf courses for golfers ranging from beginners to professionals and whichever type of course you choose, you can play it absolutely any time of year thanks to Arizona’s famously sunny weather. In fact, there are nearly 200 courses in and around the city, offering a unique variety of layouts.
Soon-to-be dads out there…looking to play a round during your Babymoon getaway? It just so happens that JW Desert Ridge Resort & Spa is home to Wildfire Golf Club, a two championship course designed by golf legends Arnold Palmer and Nick Faldo. Tee off amidst awe-inspiring mountain views that highlight Arizona’s incredible natural beauty – just as you would expect at one of the country’s most decorated resorts.
Old Town Scottsdale
Old Town Scottsdale is so full of charm and had plenty of activities to keep us entertained. One could easily spend a whole day just in this area! There were plenty of charming boutiques, southwestern souvenir shops, and art galleries to browse through. We also loved the plethora of dining options in this area; in all variety of cuisines – perfect for pregnancy cravings!
We had so much fun roaming around being tourists for the day. There’s no shortage of things to do in Old Town Scottsdale – by day or night!
What to Eat:
Bluewater Grill | www.bluewatergrill.com
If you’re in the mood for some delicious seafood, then this is the place for you!
Bluewater Grill is exactly what seafood is all about. With our resort close by, it was an ideal location right in the heart of all the action. Aside from its Phoenix location, Bluewater Grill has locations all along the west coast in California as well.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is airy, well lit and inviting. It’s a casual intimate space but with plenty of windows to watch all of the action out on the streets, which definitely added to the charm of the restaurant. Highlights of our dinner included service from seasoned professionals, amazing fare, and a warm ambiance. Our appetizers and entrees, from Baked Crab & Artichoke Dip to Cedar Plank Salmon to the 12 oz New York Steak, were cooked perfectly, had incredible flavor, and the portion sizes were truly enormous and worth every penny. In fact, we weren’t even able to finish the salmon and that’s a first! Not to mention, there are burgers and chicken for those who aren’t seafood lovers. There’s no question why it’s dubbed “Best Seafood in the Valley.”
All-in-all it was an unforgettable dining experience that will be very hard to top on any of our future travels. There’s no doubt we’ll be returning, it’s just a question as to when we can make it back to Phoenix to make it happen!
The Baked Bear | thebakedbear.com
Who doesn’t love a good sweet treat?!
Considering I’ve had the biggest sweet tooth my entire pregnancy, it was only fitting to stop into one of the most well-known ice cream shops in Phoenix, The Baked Bear! A scoop of thick, creamy, ice cream sandwiched between two freshly baked, made from scratch cookies, rolled in the topping of your choice and slightly heated. A must for anyone with a sweet tooth!
We were immediately greeted by the friendly staff when we arrived who helped explained the different options available to us. Needless to say, my white chip macadamia nut cookies, filled with cookie dough ice cream, topped with M&M’s was absolutely heavenly! BEST. ICE. CREAM. SANDWICH. EVER.
You can’t go wrong with whatever you get here, but forewarning, you will more than likely leave wanting more. Trust me when I say that everything tastes as good as it looks! So delicious that you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t experience it for yourself.
Can you please make my ice cream dreams come true and open a location in the Midwest?
Diego Pops | diegopops.com
After spending the morning exploring Old Town Scottsdale, we had worked up an appetite and were off to Diego Pops for lunch. This hip and vibrant spot was an Instagram recommendation from a fellow blogger babe of mine, and it didn’t disappoint! The interior is super chic and trendy: think pineapple wallpaper, neon signage and lots of hanging string lights + plants.
If there’s one thing I learned during my visit, it’s that Phoenix has some amazing Mexican food! We had such a blast at Diego Pops tasting a wide variety of their modern Mexican dishes like Snowball Margaritas, Grilled Street Corn, and Brussels Sprout Nachos. Yes, you read that right. A heaping pile of chips topped with roasted brussels sprouts, street corn queso, queso oaxaca, fresno chilis, pickled onions, roasted garlic beet crema, and crowned with a fried egg. Though messy, the combination of sweet corn, salty cheese, and nutty roasted brussels sprouts makes a pleasing blend. A MUST TRY and to die for.
Service was stellar, cocktails were colorful and refreshing and the patio seating was electric that just makes you feel like you’re on vacation. The menu has a little something for everyone!
Plus, the portions are everything this mama-to-be could ask for! The only thing I’m sad about it that I can’t eat here every day.
Dorian | dorianscottsdale.com
Somehow it had already turned into the last night of our babymoon, and we were looking to go out with a bang! Which to us meant ending our trip with some amazing food and company! We were looking forward to dining at Dorian’s in Old Town Scottsdale, a glamorous, German-infused martini bar and fine dining restaurant with a trendy dining room and romantic atmosphere.
Being a visitor to the Arizona dining scene, we’ve been able to indulge at a number of local restaurants during our visit, but Dorian takes the cake, literally. When you pair perfect drinks, perfect ambiance, and perfect food it creates the perfect foodie storm. We found the modern, tastefully flashy decor, including a bright airy dining room with light blue velvet booths, lots of crystal and oversized mirrors to be fun and refreshing.
The food, which is described as Californian with an Asian flare, is an eclectic mix of traditional and modern cuisine. We started with the charcuterie board and ordered the 12 oz Ribeye, Sliders Trio, and an incredible lemon drizzle cake afterward. The cake was a delicious way to wrap things up and seal us to returning next time we are around. I ate far too much, but it was my babymoon, that is the point, isn’t it?
Between the romantic ambiance and the quality of the food, Dorian is a wonderful place for cocktails and some light bites or a bottle of wine and a full meal. What a gem it truly is!
Overall, we had a truly magical time, and whatever you decide to do for your babymoon, I promise you’ll enjoy Phoenix/Scottsdale! Every couple deserves a little getaway before the baby comes.
We’re so appreciative and grateful that we were able to carve out that special time while it is still just the two of us, but now, we’re looking forward to all the good things to come – wrapping up the nursery and baby showers immediately come to mind, but more than anything, our baby boys arrival.
Please feel free to share your Phoenix must-dos in the comments! I’d love to hear from you!
